Los Angeles Clippers owner Don Sterling is at it again with racist remarks that have now been made public. TMZ released audio of a conversation where Sterling makes gross racist comments to his extramarital girlfriend, Ms. Stiviano. It was known that Sterling was blatantly racist, but he has kept a low profile in that regard after some high profile cases. In 2009 Sterling had to pay a $2.725 settlement for discriminating against Black and Hispanic families in apartment buildings that he owned in and around Los Angeles. Additionally, during the Clippers winning streak he had to pay $17.3 million to a woman in another apartment building who lost belongings in a fire. The case was more about Sterling acting as a slumlord, but there were racist overtones in the trial.
The repercussions of the audio released by TMZ has been keenly felt by the players because fans are outraged. However, no one is more upset than the team and Coach Doc Rivers. Rivers held a meeting for the players so they could vent their feelings and frustrations before getting back on the court. During the meeting the players decided on a plan of how to protest. Rivers was against such action, wanting the team to focus on the game, while he handled all public questions about Sterling. However, the players decided they needed to do something, so during Sunday’s game they wore their shirts inside out for their warm-up in order to hide the Clippers logo. They also chose to wear black socks, arm bands and wrist bands during the game to subtly voice their frustration. The Clippers are not sure of what to expect when they return home for the next game. Both the players and Coach Rivers are a little concerned that the fans may not show up in light of the remarks from team owner, Sterling.
